Seminar “Protect groundwater – our treasure of life”
In the framework of the activities of the project “Improvement of Groundwater Protection in the Mekong Delta Provinces” (IGPVN), within two days, 12 and 14/11/2015, the seminars for students were held at Ho Chi Minh City University of Natural Sciences and Can Tho University on the theme “Protect groundwater – our treasure of life”. The seminars broughtthe students an overview of groundwater resources, let them form and practise innovative ideas to raise the community’s awareness on groundwater resources protection and sustainable use of water.
The seminars were aimed to provide students basic knowledge of groundwater resources in the Mekong River Delta, as well as equip them with skills in creative thinking and ability to develop idea in future. At the same time, the seminars gave the students information of the project and the competition’s significance and awards.
The seminar talks were given by the experts from the IGPVN project: Ms. Dorit Lehrack – Project Leader; Mr. Florian Jenn – Hydrogeologist and Dr. Hoang Thi Hanh – Hydrogeochemistry Specialist and the Division for Water Resources Planning and Investigation for the South of Vietnam – National Center for Water Resources Planning and Investigation (NAWAPI): Dr. Bui Tran Vuong – Hydrogeologist.
Experts from the IGPVN project giving lectures to the students
With the support of the Communist Youth Union, Union of students, passionate involvement, the majority of the students, training seminars take place in an academic and playful atmosphere.
On 12/11/2015, the seminar was held in a large lecture hall of Ho Chi Minh City University of Natural Sciences. After the welcoming arts, is seminar with the main activities.
Representatives of the project, Ms. Dorit Lehrack gave an introductory remark about the seminar content, the activities sponsored contest, awarding activities.
Mr. Florian Jenn presented about the project history, the current phase (phase 3) andthe project’s components.
Dr. Bui Tran Vuong introduced the basis concept of hydrogeology, water resources, groundwater resources. Social economy, meteorological, geological and hydro-geological conditions, groundwater resources of the Mekong Delta. The examined documentation on groundwater resources Mekong Delta.
Dr. Hoang Thi Hanh and Mr. Florian Jenn showed the students a groundwater demonstration model. Using this model, the simulation of groundwater recharge from precipitation; groundwater exploitation; groundwater movement in aquifers, groundwater level drawdown due to exploitation activities; groundwater contamination pathway from the surface.
Ms. Dorit Lehrack gave presentation on creative thinking and problem solving: The unexpected awareness, word patterns, issues and problems solving, the tool set of thinking and decision-making.
On 14/11/2015, a similar seminar was held at the C1 building, Can Tho University.
Due to a large number of students attending the seminar, after the presentation of Dr. Bui Tran Vuong, the students were divided into two groups to work in shift: Group 1 instructed by Ms. Dorit Lehrack on creative thinking and problem solving; Group 2 instructed by Dr. Hoang Thi Hanh and Mr. Florian Jenn on groundwater demonstration model.
In general, the seminars were successful to improve the students’ understanding on the problem of groundwater resources in the Mekong River delta, to the students’ ideas about groundwater resources protection and sustainable use of water.
The IGPVN project will continue to organize another similar seminar for the students of the Ho Chi Minh City University of Natural Resources and Environment next month. The project also plans to organize more seminars to help the students to develop more creative ideas, so that they will generate high quality products for the contest.
