Report No 2: Site selection for a MAR pilot in Hau Giang province
May 2025

In the Partners for Water project “ASR application for Domestic Fresh Water Supply in the Vietnamese Mekong Delta”, the ambition is to build an Aquifer Storage and Recovery (ASR) pilot location in Hau Giang. This reports describes the site selection process for pre-selected four premises by Hawasuco. While the demand for ASR is highest at the Cai Tac and Long Thanh site, they both lack the prerequisite of surplus treated water that could be used for aquifer recharge. Hence, both sites are not suitable.

The selected pilot site in Nga Bay fulfills this pre-requisite with additional treatment capacity available at the site. While currently there is limited demand for ASR at the site, this might change in the mid to long-term future, as saline intrusions into the surface water are coming deeper into the delta mainly due to relative sea level rise and riverbed incision from sand mining. In addition, the Nga Bay site has sufficient space available to drill the additional monitoring and ASR well. The qp1 aquifer has a thickness of at least 20 m and the site has two back-up wells that can be used for monitoring.
