Groundwater resources under climate change - State of knowledge in the Mekong Delta
Technical Report, Hanover, December 2025

Sixteen years of cooperation in the field of groundwater, between the Federal Institute of Geosciences and Natural Resources (BGR) and the National Center for Water Resources Planning and Investigation (NAWAPI), are ending with the ‘Climate Resilient Management of Groundwater and Geohazards’ (CRMGG) project. The focus of this cooperation has primarily been the Vietnamese Mekong Delta.

To conclude this cooperation, this publication presents a synthesis of the existing knowledge on groundwater resources in the Mekong Delta. It is organised into nine interconnected topics designed to address nine key questions:
• Where does groundwater come from?
• Why is groundwater important?
• What are the impacts of groundwater abstraction?
• Why is groundwater becoming saline?
• How will climate change impact groundwater resources?
• Which processes cause land subsidence?
• Can groundwater use be sustainable?
• Could aquifer storage and recovery be a solution?
• What are best practices to protect groundwater?
