Hydrogeologist for field work and data acquisition in the Mekong Delta

Job profile

The hydrogeologist will work as an employee of the German Federal Institute for Geosciences and Resources (BGR) in the project “Improvement of Groundwater Protection in Vietnam” (IGPVN). A contract of 6 months will be offered with the chance to extend it over the duration of the project until end of June 2017. The project aims to support the development of national policies for groundwater protection and the improvement of groundwater management in the coastal areas of the Mekong Delta. A large part of the project activities will be focused on a pilot area in one of the coastal provinces.

The employee will represent the project team in the Mekong Delta and work in close cooperation with the National Center for Water Resources Planning and Investigation, the Division for Water Resources Planning and Investigation in the South (DWRPIS), and the Departments of Natural Resources and Environment (DONRE) of the provinces. His/her main responsibility is to collect and assess existing hydrogeological data and to support and carry out hydrogeological field work to extend and improve the hydrogeological understanding of the pilot area. The acquired data and preliminary analysis will provide the basis for a envisaged numerical modeling and the development of water management proposals.

Place of Work

Office: Ho Chi Minh City (BGR office)

Regular visits to Hanoi and Mekong Delta provinces (esp. Sóc Trăng and Cà Mau)

Tasks

  • Collection and review of existing hydrogeological data (data management)
  • Planning, preparing, and carrying out hydrogeological investigations in close cooperation with DWRPIS, NAWAPI and DONRE, e.g.

–    regular water level measurements, operation of data loggers

–    water sampling

–    pumping tests

  • GIS-based management of geodata
  • Contribution to technical reports, publications, and public presentation of project results

Requirements

Necessary

  • Bachelor or Engineer Degree in Hydrogeology, Geology, Hydrology, or another geoscientific/environmental study course with a focus on hydrogeology
  • Good knowledge of quantitative methods of hydrogeology and hydrology
  • Basic knowledge of interpretation of hydraulic tests
  • Basic knowledge of GIS and geodata processing
  • Experience in acquiring and reviewing existing hydrogeological data, maps and reports.
  • Experience in the planning and performing of hydrogeological investigations and in handling  of measurement data
  • Working knowledge of English and fluent in Vietnamese
  • Familiarity with hydrogeology of and groundwater use in the Mekong Delta
  • Ability for interdisciplinary teamwork
  • Experience in compiling  technical reports and publications
